It also discusses the importance of creating spaces and opportunities where children can play freely in their local neighbourhoods. It has frequently been suggested that through playing children are practising skills for adult life. It is now becoming more widely accepted that play is a behaviour that exists for its own sake and has a fundamental developmental role. From the early stages of brain development and bonding with parents, to the independence and autonomy of the teenage years, play makes its contribution.

The most important development in early childhood social cognition is the development of theory of mind. The basis of this crucial ability lies in the development of theory of mind. The development of theory of mind from birth to 5 years of age is now well described in the research literature 4,5 — or at least, we can describe how infants and children behave in experimental situations as well as in natural settings. There are problems, however, in interpretation of the findings. This contradiction can be resolved by taking a developmental view of theory of mind — that is, early-developing intuitive awareness later becomes more reflective and explicit. By age 2, children clearly show awareness of the difference between thoughts in the mind and things in the world.

The Power of Play

Even though children increasingly spend most summer days inside or at a full-day camp program, the idealistic image of summertime is still one of free play: neighbors racing bikes, friends building a fort, siblings producing a show, a family on the beach. How can families encourage play — especially in an overscheduled, anxious environment, and even when work schedules are tight or when safety concerns prevent neighborhood roaming? Play comes in many forms. The secret sauce is playfulness. In play, children learn to navigate their physical and social environment , while also imagining and constructing new realities. They practice solving problems , testing out how to love, what is wise, and what is safe. Because play is so varied, there are many benefits to it — benefits that are just as real for preschoolers as for middle-schoolers.

How play helps children's development

Play is the work of children. It consists of those activities performed for self-amusement that have behavioral, social, and psychomotor rewards. It is child-directed, and the rewards come from within the individual child; it is enjoyable and spontaneous. Play is an important part of the childhood development.

What is social development? Social development refers to the process by which a child learns to interact with others around them. As they develop and perceive their own individuality within their community, they also gain skills to communicate with other people and process their actions. Social development most often refers to how a child develops friendships and other relationships, as well how a child handles conflict with peers. Why is social development so important?
