The good stress: How eustress helps you grow

In psychology , stress is a feeling of emotional strain and pressure. Small amounts of stress may be desired, beneficial, and even healthy. Positive stress helps improve athletic performance. It also plays a factor in motivation , adaptation, and reaction to the environment. Excessive amounts of stress, however, may lead to bodily harm. Stress can increase the risk of strokes , heart attacks , ulcers , and mental illnesses such as depression [2] and also aggravation of a pre-existing condition. Stress can be external and related to the environment, [3] but may also be caused by internal perceptions that cause an individual to experience anxiety or other negative emotions surrounding a situation, such as pressure, discomfort , etc.

We suggest that the meaning assigned to the word stress has shifted from Selye's original formulation, and that this shift, in conjunction with the use of the Yerkes Dodson Law leads to inappropriate management of stress in organizations. We conclude that the concept that some stress is good and enhances performance should be rejected in favour of more useful and accurate concepts. Le Fevre, M. Report bugs here.

The results revealed a significant positive correlation between eustress and life satisfaction.
