POLISC-150 - Introduction to American Government and Politics - Steven Reti (ZTC)
Young people, in particular, are using the Internet for social networking. Figure below presents three important pieces of information. First, the bar for each country tells you what percentage of those using the Internet are using it for social networking and what percentage are not. For example, in the united States, 82 percent of the public use the Internet, but only 46 percent use it for social networking.
The column on the far right gives the percentage of the public that does not use or have access to the Internet or e-mail. Table presents social networking usage by age range. Typically, when you read information presented as percentages in a table, either a row or column sums to percent.
In this case, it does not. This table presents a division of age based on the total for each country that uses social networking. So, for example, we learned from Figure that 46 percent of those who use the Internet use social networking. Of that 46 percent, 77 percent are between the ages of 18 and 29; 55 percent are between the ages of 30 and 49; and 23 percent are 50 and older. The far right column represents the size of the gap between the oldest and youngest social network users.
Look carefully at both the figure and the table. What conclusions can you draw about the spread of technology across the globe? What conclusions might you draw about the relationship between age and use of social networking? These figures are from If information was available for , would you imagine that it would look similar?
Based on total sample. Samples in China, India and Pakistan are disproportionately urban. Pew Research Center Q Accessed at: www.

Publisher: University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing. The book is fairly comprehensive, almost to a fault. There's little complexity and often concepts and events are oversimplified to their most basic elements. It reads more like soundbites in places, which is probably very appropriate and Comprehensiveness rating: 3 see less.
